Wednesday, July 22.
U. off at 7.30 on Baldy to fetch the tent etc. from the lower regions where they have been sweltering and slaving. U. and H. Back about 4.30. They say they put a register on a tree --- one can guess the style of it as they refused to repeat to word for word. Their description of the valley does not sound enticing --- all burnt timber as far as they could see, narrow and deep and rocky (Coleman’s “profound and desolate valley”). Medicine Lake W. described as like a washbowl, steep sided all around, also and rocky and burnt, and not a sign of life except one small sandpiper which Muggins caught and ate up. W. and Mr. B. put the raft together ready for the return trip tomorrow, luckily they had saved the logs.
Maligne Lake.
